County Longford Citizens Information Service

In order to facilitate the people of County Longford to access an independent information service of the highest quality, a broadly represented voluntary Steering Group was established in November 1999. Its objective was to develop a Countywide Citizens Information Service. The Steering Group included the key statutory and voluntary groups/organisations in County Longford.

An initial task for the group was to prepare a development plan in accordance with the NSSB (now Citizens Information Board) strategy to ensure complementarity.

In November 1999 following ratification of the first 3-year strategic plan funding was approved by the NSSB to support its implementation.

In April 2000 a full-time Development Manager was appointed to carry out the development of the Citizens Information Service in County Longford with responsibility for the day today development and management of the service in Longford town and County. In July 2000 the service incorporated as a non-profit Company Limited By Guarantee, with Charitable Status in tax law. A dedicated Board of Management with the responsibility for the management, planning and development of the service was elected.

In February 2001 County Longford Citizens Information Service was officially launched to the people of County Longford at the Key Centre, Level One, Longford Shopping Centre by the then Minister for Social Community & Family Affairs, Mr. Dermot Ahern T.D.
