Objectives: Objectives: Leisure buddies is a befriending project run by St Christopher’s services for the benefit of increasing social interactions for the people with disabilities who attend the service. Currently there are 2 programmes running: Leisure Buddies & Youth Buddies.
Leisure Buddies caters for the adults in the services who are matched with an adult volunteer from the community with whom they have common interests. The match pair met up at least once a month and an agrees time and attends a social activity of their choice.
The aim of this project is to support people with intellectual disabilities to access leisure activities and to form friendships with their peers in the community. Volunteers play an important role in supporting people with intellectual disabilities to be part of their community and o access activities. This support can take many forms and can be as simple as having a cup of tea and someone to chat to. Volunteers must be oven 18.
Youth Buddies is very similar but the volunteer does not have the same amount of responsibility as a leisure buddy volunteer. Youth buddies met once a month in a group and attend social activities both locally and away. The activities are organised and fully supported. The group caters for teenagers and young adults in the service and volunteers are usually from local secondary schools and must be over 16. This is a great opportunity for young people to gain life experiences.

Special Services: To get involved a volunteer needs to contact the coordinator and request an application form. They will also be asked permission to have reference checks done and a garda vetting. The potential volunteer will met with coordinator on a few occasions to ensure they are a suitable candidate. After all criteria are fulfilled a suitable match will be made based on age, and interest and geographical location of the volunteer. The new volunteer will be supported by the coordinator for the first few outings until they feel comfortable.
